BAA Stansted has scooped a major international award in recognition of the outstanding efforts made by the airport to encourage passengers to choose public transport ahead of their car to travel to and from the airport.
Stansted picked up the prize for ‘Mobility Manage-ment in Companies’ at the International Transport Fo-rum in Leipzig, Germany – an event where transport ministers and industry leaders from around the world gather to debate global transport issues and reward best practice.
The award is in recognition of the airport’s achievements in developing a strategy that has encouraged more passengers to use public transport.
Around 44 per cent currently use bus, coach or rail services for their journey to and from the airport which is the highest figure for a major UK airport and one of the highest in the world.
Stansted currently has more than 550 bus and coach departures every day to over 60 destinations across the UK.
The airport also has rail services every 15 minutes to London Liverpool Street and regular rail connections tothe north of Stansted. This extensive route network ensures as many passengers as possible have an attractive public transport option for their journey to the airport.
Nick Barton, Stansted’s strategy and solutions director, said: “As a major international airport, we recognise that we have a responsibility to encourage as many passengers as possible to use public transport.
“I feel this award is well deserved and is recognition for all the hard work that is taking place at Stansted to ensure we continue to lead the way with best practice in the industry.
“One of the key ingredients to our success has been the work of the Stansted Area Transport Forum. Made up of both public and private organisations, this forum allows for a partnership approach to transport issues and gives us the platform to successfully deliver on the airports plans to improve public transport.
“While we are extremely pleased with this honour, we also know we must continue to build on the strong foundations we have in place.
“This award gives us added momentum to strengthen our UK leading position, as we continue to set ourselves ambitious targets for the future.”
